Sun Prairie, Wisconsin (September 1, 2021)………We’ve been counting the days. We’ve been counting the hours. We’ve been counting the minutes too.
Not only is it time to reach the championship stretch of the season, but also to reach the moment of the return of USAC NOS Energy Drink Midget National Championship racing to Sun Prairie, Wisconsin’s Angell Park Speedway.
As USAC goes into the Firemen’s Nationals at the legendary 1/3-mile race for the first time since 2015, Buddy Kofoid (Penngrove, Calif.) leads the closest USAC National Midget point race between first and second entering September since that same season six years ago with just 20 points separating he and Emerson Axsom (Franklin, Ind.).
Meanwhile, the 41-point separation from first to third-place between Kofoid and reigning series champ Chris Windom (Canton, Ill.) is the slimmest it’s been in a decade since 2011.
Axsom and Windom are tied atop the leaderboard with 16 top-fives in 24 feature starts. At the same time, it’s Kofoid who’s been the master of consistency thus far with 22 top-tens in 24 races.
Justin Grant (Ione, Calif.), fourth in the standings, is the most recent series regular to win a USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget feature at Pennsylvania’s Lanco’s Clyde Martin Memorial Speedway on August 8. He followed up with a runner-up finish in the BC39 at The Dirt Track at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Aug. 19 and leads the series with eight heat race wins.
Tanner Thorson (Minden, Nev.) leads all drivers with the series in terms of wins (6), laps led (121) and fast qualifying times (4) and is fifth overall in the standings.
The top-eight in the standings have started all 24 feature events in 2021: Kofoid, Axsom, Windom, Grant, Thorson, Daison Pursley (Locust Grove, Okla.), Logan Seavey (Sutter, Calif.) and Thomas Meseraull (San Jose, Calif.), plus 10th place Cannon McIntosh (Bixby, Okla.). Ninth-place Kevin Thomas Jr. (Cullman, Ala.) has started 23 of the 24.
Through those 24 races, the series has already seen 11 different feature winners. By comparison, 2020’s 28-race schedule featured eight different winners.
Among the 11 this year, four of them have been first-time USAC National Midget winners with Axsom and Pursley joined by Kyle Cummins (Princeton, Ind.) and Corey Day (Clovis, Calif.). That’s the second most first-time series winners in a single season since 2008, only trailing the five victory lane newbies from 2019.
This Sunday’s Firemen’s Nationals will have the pits opening at 1:30pm CT, stands open at 4pm, drivers meeting at 4:15 and hot laps at 5pm, followed immediately by qualifying and racing.
Tickets are available in advance at https://angellpark.racing/tickets/. Adult tickets (18+) are $25. Adults (62+) are $20. Students (12-17) are $12. Kids (6-11) are $5.
Sunday’s Firemen’s Nationals will be aired live on FloRacing at https://bit.ly/2ZpafUr.
